Spelling It Out

I homeschool my two kids. They're in 1st and 3rd grades right now, so there's still a lot of stress involvement on my part as far as the teaching.
For example, spelling. I spell out a lot of words. A lot. Often times I spell words I've already spelled before, sometimes as recent as 5 seconds ago (Pay attention!!!). It's mind numbing and I kind of want to stick pencils in my ears. Not only because I'm spelling words like b-e-n-t and s-m-a-l-l (How about something interesting like c-o-n-u-n-d-r-u-m or s-e-s-q-u-i-c-e-n-t-e-n-n-i-a-l?), but because I'm hearing myself say the same things over and over.

The other day I asked Colby…
me: Didn't I just tell you how to spell that?
Colby: Yes. [sigh] I wasn't listening.
me: (smiling sweetly, and not at all losing patience) But you asked me how to spell it. Why do you ask if you aren't going to listen to the answer?

I'm so thankful the Lord doesn't want to stick pencils in his ears. He's so patient with us, even when he's having to spell something out for us for the 20th time.
I'm so grateful that he doesn't roll his eyes and say, "Amy, we've been over this already."
Whether it's because we're still learning or because we're just stubborn, rebellious, lazy, or all of the above, the Lord is so patient with us.

Psalm 86:15 -- But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. (NIV)

I don't want to presume on his patience (Romans 2:4a says "Do you take the kindness of God for granted? Do you see his patience and tolerance as a signs that he is a pushover when it comes to sin? (The Voice)), but in my human-ness and hard-headedness, I'm grateful to serve a patient and loving God.

Lord, thank you for being patient with me time and time again. I don't deserve your grace, but you give it anyway. Give me your patience with the precious kids you've entrusted to me, and an extra measure of your grace during spelling would be extremely appreciated. Also in traffic and long lines.
Amen.

What tries your patience and how do you handle it?
